CASAC Check Point was introduced in Leeds because the incidence of people being exploited by rogue tradesmen, particularly the older and more vulnerable is far greater than most people realise. These people prey on all sectors of the community, but their main targets tend to be homeowners living alone.

We work within West Yorkshire to protect householders (especially older adults, disabled, or vulnerable people) from bogus and ‘cowboy’ builders, by providing a safe, secure and reliable source of tradesmen, when they need repairs, maintenance, or improvements carrying out in their home. We seek to prevent crime by addressing the problem of rogue tradesmen, who do shoddy or unnecessary work at exorbitant prices or who make small jobs bigger than they need be.

The scheme has compiled a register of approved tradesmen, companies and contractors who can do almost any job in your house and garden. All of these people do good quality work at a fair market price. They are not necessarily the cheapest you can find, but they are reliable, honest and will not rip you off. Before anyone can be included on our list we carry out a rigorous vetting procedure which includes:

  • Obtaining three references from customers who have had jobs done in the last year
  • Checking with Trading Standards to see if any complaints have been lodged against them.
  • Police Checks on all workers for any relevant convictions.
  • Company accounts are seen to ensure proper registration and trading
  • Public Liability insurance certificate is seen to ensure properly insured for work undertaken

When a householder telephones CASAC Check Point, careful details of the job are recorded. We then ask an appropriate tradesperson to telephone the customer (within two working days of their call) to make an appointment. If the advice and estimate given are acceptable, they can contract the tradesperson to do the work, or, reject the estimate if they wish.
